คำบุพบท across และ over มักจะใช้ในความหมายที่คล้ายคลึงกันอยู่มาก แต่ยังมีข้อแตกต่างที่ควรรู้ดังนี้
1. ทั้งสองคำใช้ในความหมาย "on หรือ to the other side" ของเส้น แม่น้ำ ถนน ฯลฯ (นั่นคือ ตำแหน่งหรือการเคลื่อนไหวที่เกี่ยวข้องกับสิ่งที่ "long and thin")
We walked over / across the road.
See if you can jump over / across the stream.
His room's just over / across the corridor.
We'll be over / across the frontier by midnight.

If we can be over / across the fence before sunrise we've got a chance.
When I last saw him he was climbing very slowly over the fence. (ไม่ใช่ ... across the fence.)
3. ทั้ง across และ over สามารถใช้กับการเคลื่อนไหวภายในพื้นที่จำเพาะ เช่น fields, a desert, a dance-floor
Who are those people wandering over / across the fields?
อย่างไรก็ตาม เมื่อต้องการหมายถึง "from one side to the other of the area" ให้ใช้ across
It took six weeks to walk across the desert. (ไม่ใช่ ...over the desert.)
และไม่นิยมใช้ over กับการเคลื่อนที่ภายในพื้นที่ประเภทสามมิติ เช่น room
He walked across the room, smiling strangely. (ไม่ใช่ ... over the room...)
4. ข้อควรระวัง over ในฐานะที่เป็นคำกริยาวิเศษนั้นมีความหมายกว้างกว่าที่เป็นบุพบท เช่นเราไม่สามารถพูดว่า *Let's swim over the river to the church. ที่ถูกต้องควรพูดว่า Let's swim over to the church.
