ความจริงเราใช้ according to เมื่อต้องการบอกว่าข้อมูลของเรามาจากคนอื่น จากหนังสือ หรือแหล่งอื่น ความหมายของวลีนี้คล้ายกับ "if what X says is true" เช่น
According to Joan, her boss is a real tyrant.
According to the timetable, the train gets in at 8.27.
ปกติเราไม่ใช้ according to กับคำประเภท view หรือ opinion แต่จะใช้ in เช่น in the Government's view, in his opinion etc. (และไม่ใช้ after กับคำกล่าวเช่นนี้ด้วย ที่มักจะผิดกัน...เช่น After my opinion ...)
